DON’T MISS PLACES
Updated: 05/20/10
The number of vehicles in the parking lot with local license plates is a good indicator to help decide if you should stop at a place. But, word of mouth from fellow travelers is better. We will list here places you should consider visiting. They need not be high profile, major attractions.
There are not a lot of places listed on this page because we will list here only places that are unique and/or outstanding. We hope this page helps as you plan your travels. We will list pertinent information regarding clothes, shoes, walking conditions, amenities or fees to assist you. Your comments regarding the places listed and additions to this list are encouraged. If we include your information, we will show only your first name(s).
These sights, attractions, campgrounds, restaurants, scenic drives or scenic overlooks are listed by state or Canadian province. The year(s) noted indicates the years visited or the last year visited.

Chain restaurants We have found some chain restaurants that are not nationwide but that we enjoy and seek out when on the road.
Culver's (2003 -present) These restaurants are a chain operating in several states. Our first visit was in Indiana. We find this 'almost' fast food restaurant very good. The food is prepared after you order and delivered to your table. Our favorite is the fish sandwich. Over 60? - they no longer have a 'senior card', you just ask for a senior discount to save 5%.
Fazoli's (1999 -present) We found this "Italian food fast" restaurant chain for the first time on a visit in Mt. Pleasant, MI. The food is very good. Prices are reasonable and the dress is casual.
Mystic Seaport, Mystic CT We visited there in 2003. - Connecticut - 2003
J B’s Fish Camp, New Smyrna Beach, FL (1990) A real experience. It is still there - it was not a victim of condo sprawl. Michelle and Steve ate there in September, 2000. Cross the bridge to the island and drive to the south end of the island. A fellow worker told us to go in, no matter what it looked like on the outside - we are glad we did. Prices were reasonable and the dress was casual. Expect a paper table cloth, paper towels for napkins, maybe a dog in the doorway ... and ... the best seafood. [Jim and Linda]

Whistle Stop Cafe, Juliette, GA ( Rated the "Best Diner" in Dave Hunter's book Along Interstate 75) [Featured in movie, Fried Green Tomatoes] [www. i75online .com]
Blue River Cafe, Milltown IN (2002) A nice place to enjoy a great meal. We understand the chef is from Louisville. The quality of the food is a surprise in such a small community. Most meals were in the $15 to $20 range. We are sorry to report that the Blue River Cafe burned to the ground in May, 2010. We will announce if they rebuild.
Ox Yoke Inn, Amana Colonies IA This is a nice place. We preferred the dinner offerings more than those on the lunch menu.
Ronneburg Restaurant, Amana Colonies IA This was a great place for lunch. We did not go here for dinner. The staff was extremely friendly and pleasant. Prices were reasonable.
Maine
Oceanarium - Bar Harbor, Bar Harbor ME It is the Maine lobster museum, marsh tour and lobster hatchery. We visited there in 2003 - Maine - 2003 This was a very informative attraction.
Alice's Candy Corn, Mackinaw City, MI ( 1970-present) The best caramel corn and "home made" candy and fudge. It is a mandatory stop for us to and from the UP.
Fred's of Roscommon, Roscommon MI (1984-present) We are pleased to report that Fred's of Roscommon has reopened under new ownership after being closed for over three years. Our visit in 2009 confirmed what we were told - the facility has been remodeled and the quality of the food is as good as in the past. Prices are reasonable and the dress is casual in this vacation area restaurant.
Freeway Fritz, Bridgeport, MI (1994-CLOSED 2009) We hope it re-opens. It was a convenient place to taste the world renowned Frankenmuth chicken without the traffic and crowds of people in the tourist center of shops and restaurants located in the city of Frankenmuth, MI. Freeway Fritz offered "eat in" or "carry-out" food, a little gift shop area, baked goods, sandwiches deli and frozen yogurt. Our tow vehicle automatically stoped in Bridgeport for fuel and 'we' fueled up with chicken. Prices were reasonable and the dress was casual. WE MISS IT.
Higgins Lake, Higgins Lake/Roscommon MI (1984-present)
Cool, clean and
clear water. The best public access is from state parks at the north and south ends of
the lake. We
always use South Higgins Lake State Park as it is better for boaters. (See
our "Prior Destinations" page for more information about the
area.)
Mama Mia's Pizzeria, Mackinaw City MI (2001) has a great museum upstairs relate to the building of the Big Mac bridge. The pizza is pretty good too! [Al P.}
Post Cafe, Mackinac Island, MI (1992) is inside Fort Mackinac. It offers a view of the harbor and the tourists below, you will want to extent your lunch for the entire afternoon. You must purchase a fort tour ticket to get to the cafe. Wear comfortable clothes and footwear for your walk around the island.
Red Knapp's, Oxford, MI (2006 - present) We have driven by many times but recently have been enjoying their fish and chips - the best fish we have had since leaving Alaska. The lunch serving was $8.95 and dinner is $11.95. Other menu items look as appealing. Oh yes, the bread is delicious.
Soo Locks Boat Tour, Sault Saint Marie, MI (1997) A nice boat trip through the locks. It provides views and a narrative of the area. Well worth the $13 per person fare. If the weather is cool, it can be cold on the boat - take a jacket just in case.
St. Clair Inn, St. Clair, MI (1975-present) A very nice place for lunch or dinner. It is located on the St. Clair river. A little pricey but good food and ambiance. The dress can be casual but many people dress up a little. A boardwalk through town provides a nice way to spend time before or after your meal.
Whitefish Point, Paradise MI (1997) While in the Tahquamenon Falls area, allow a couple hours to visit the museum and lighthouse grounds locate north of Paradise.
Lambert's Cafe, "The Only Home of Throwed Rolls" This is a fun place to eat. At the same time, the 'all you can eat' chicken wings we ordered were delicious. Don't order a lot of food - free 'pass arounds' are offered to you throughout your meal. Pricing (cash only) is reasonable and dress is casual. They have three locations - Sikeston, MO ... Ozark, MO ... Foley, AL.
Ozark Country Campground, Branson MO (2007) A small but nice campground that is close to the 'strip'. The owners are retired Michiganders who have worked hard to provide a pleasant experience. It had a strong and free WiFi signal.
Niagara Falls, NY (1985) We have been to the falls many times. We have seen it in the spring, in the summer , in the fall and dressed in winter white. We even made a special trip to see Niagara Falls DRY. (They diverted the water to clear fallen rock.) On our last trip , we took the walk under the falls. It was very impressive.

Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Island (1997) Take the road that skirts the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. A destination for a couple days in beautiful surroundings. Take warm clothes with a hood and hiking boots. Also, be sure to explore a small campground about two miles north of Cheticamp. [Dianne & Bob]
The Chowder Bowl at Nye Beach, Newport, OR (2008) The best clam chowder.
Mayfield Dairy, Athens, TN ( Rated the "Best Ice Cream" in Dave Hunter's book Along Interstate 75) [www. i75online .com]
Shelburne Museum, Shelburne VT We visited there in 2003 - Vermont - 2003. Plan enough time to enjoy all the displays. It can easily be a day-long attraction.
The One Eyed Crab, Westport, WA (2008) The seafood chowder was excellent. The fish dinners looked great.
Carl's Ice Cream, Fredericksburg, VA [Exit 133] (Rated the "Best Ice Cream" in Tom Gilligan's book I-95 Exit Information Guide) [Open 2-14 thru 11-30 [www. usastar .com/i95/homepage.htm]
Mukluk Annie's Salmon Bake, Teslin, Yukon Territory They specialize in salmon - other items are on the menu. If you ordered from the right side of the menu, you got FREE 'dry' camping, a FREE one-hour boat ride and can wash your RV for FREE. Since the restaurant prices are reasonable (under $20 Canadian) and the food is good, it is a good deal. We enjoyed the free boat ride on Teslin Lake so much, we gave 'Mukluk Chuck' a $5 tip. There have been reports that Mukluk Annie's has closed.
